THE Picfare national schools badminton tournament gets underway this morning at the Lugogo Indoor Courts.
The annual event is to be bankrolled by Picfare Group of Companies to the tune of Shs 6.5m, an increase of Shs 500,000 from last year.
The Nkrumah Road based company has sponsored the event since 1996. Equipment in the sponsorship includes 400 T-shirts, 30 tins of shuttle cocks, trophies, certificates and scholastic materials that will be given to various winners in the U-10, U-13 and U-15 categories.
“The cash prizes shall be offered to the senior players in the U-18 category. We do expect over 30 schools according to the registration records,” event coordinator Simon Mugabi said.
Sports Minister Charles Bakkabulindi will preside over the official opening of this event.
Big names expected to grace the tournament include Lubiri Secondary School ace Ivan Mayega, Ian Ssenoga and Musa Murambira in the boys U-18 category while Apollo Kadija and Fiona Sembogo are the players to watch in the girl's category.
